Vitakraft Sunseed Workers in Talks Over New Union Contract

Members of UFCW Local 75’s union bargaining committee met with Vitakraft Sunseed (VKSS) management on May 1 and May 8 to negotiate a new union contract for VKSS employees in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Vitakraft, a German pet food manufacturer, purchased Sunseed in 2007. In 2012, workers at Vitakraft Sunseed organized a union for the first time. In 2013, VKSS workers became UFCW Local 75 members and negotiated their first union contract with the company.

May 8 was our bargaining committee’s second meeting with VKSS management. As in our first meeting, contract language items were discussed and tentative agreement was reached on some of these issues, including overtime by seniority and credit of points for good attendance.

We’re proud of the progress we have made so far; all contract negotiations require a measure of compromise in order to move forward. We make compromises and in turn, we expect the company to be willing to compromise in order to establish good jobs and a safe working environment for the employees who make their company a success.

We will continue to work towards fair contract language regarding issues like bathroom breaks, just cause, and your union representatives’ access to the plant. After these issues are resolved, we will begin negotiating economic issues with the goal of winning wage increases and quality, affordable health care.

Your union bargaining committee will meet with company representatives again on Tuesday, May 12. We will continue to update members at Vitakraft Sunseed throughout the process.
